Peak Oil Now – Little time left

A number of prominent Oil industry insiders and observers have in the last weeks publicly declared with some confidence that we are now at or already past the global Peak Oil extraction rate.

Matt Simmons – Oil Industry Investment banker
T. Bone Pickens – Legendary Texas oil man
Stuart Staniford – Prominent editor for ‘The Oil Drum’

Stuart's analysis of the rapid decline of Saudi Arabian output is particularly noteworthy (follow up article). This news in combination with Mexican Cantarel’s output dropping rapidly implies the world will be lucky to stay on the plateau we have enjoyed for the last two to three years

ASPO-NZ - Re-localisation symposium

With Peak Oil consequences looming ever closer and climate news starting to fill front pages more frequently ASPO-NZ is in the process of organizing a weekend symposium in April. Rather than another consumptive talk fest this will have significant participant workshop streams and some fantastic speakers and moderators

  1. Alan Hart, CEO of Summit Exploration Ltd, a US-based oil and gas exploration company
  2. David Holmgren, Internationally known Permaculture speaker. David will discuss Energy & Settlement patterns. The workshop will include Motueka’s Sustainable Settlements Ltd as a case study.
  3. Dr Susan Krumdiek, University of Canterbury, Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering, Specialization: Advanced Materials for Energy Systems & Energy Systems Engineering
  4. Steve Markham & Martin Workman, Tasman & Nelson Council Policy managers (in charge of Resource management)
  5.  Representative for the Minister of Internal Affairs.
  6. Kevin Moore,  Environmental Consultant and author of "Burn Baby Burn"  and "Surviving The Future"
  7. Deidre Kent, Author of Healthy Money, Healthy Planet.

The workshops will focus on:

            - Governance structure for Change
            - Permaculture and Settlement Patterns
            - Economic localization
            - Energy Transition

The aim of the workshops is specifically to work with government (local & central), business and community interests through issues that are holding up mitigation of both climate change and peak oil.

We would very much like to see every ASPO-NZ member turn up and contribute with their hearts and minds to moving the country along. So, please check out the details and enroll!

ASPO Secretary

Anne Fitzsimon has resigned from the executive committee to focus on her political ambitions for the local city council in Nelson. Thank you Anne for your enthusiasm in helping to start up ASPO-NZ. A warm welcome to Jeremy Wilkinson who has joined the executive committee and has taken over Anne’s position. Those of you on the advisory board will be working with Jeremy on various press releases in the future.

Invoicing

ASPO-NZ has now been in existence for more than a year and it is time for some annual membership dues to be invoiced starting now. Please note that the membership dues are a minimum payment and any donations on top of the minimum will be put to good use for Peak Oil activism
